About the Walsall 11 Plus

Walsall has two long-established single-sex grammar schools — Queen Mary's Grammar School (boys) and Queen Mary's High School (girls). Both select through the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test provided by GL Assessment, administered via the Shropshire/Wolverhampton/Walsall (SWW) part of the partnership.

The test is two multiple-choice papers covering English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, with answers on a machine-marked sheet and age-standardised scores. It is sat in September at the start of Year 6; both schools are heavily oversubscribed.

Walsall 11+ — common questions

Is the test still CEM?

No — Walsall's grammar schools now use GL Assessment as part of the West Midlands partnership, so prepare with GL-style materials.

Do I sit separate tests for each school?

No — one West Midlands/SWW result is used to apply to both Queen Mary's Grammar and Queen Mary's High (and other partnership schools).

Does passing guarantee a place?

No — meeting the qualifying standard only makes a child eligible; places are then decided by score rank and oversubscription/catchment criteria.
